Bernstein Composes Music for Focus Films, “Far From Heaven”
Elmer Bernstein has recently completed scoring the Todd Haynes/Christine Vachon film, “Far From Heaven,” starring Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid.
Set in suburban Connecticut in the 1950s, the film revolves around a privileged family whose obsession with appearances crosses both sexual and racial lines, critical themes for the era and for the characters that must face life-altering decisions. The film is scheduled to be released in early November.
Bernstein has composed for a number of films involving these themes, among them “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Devil in a Blue Dress.” “The prejudices were harsh and obvious, but the feelings evoked from the characters are at times more subtle. It’s a challenge to incorporate both while moving the narrative current at a proper pace,” he stated.
